Quiet Evening

Image Description

I’ve been anticipating this challenge as the Oregon Coast has been perhaps my favorite place on the planet for most of my life. My grandparents lived in Yachats on the central coast so I started going there from when I was 4 or 5 years old until now 70 years later. Most of my explorations as a photographer have been on the north and central coasts but this year and last I spent a lot of time on the southern coast closer to Brookings. This was from my first evening at Harris Beach. I had a couple of hours after setting up my campsite and decided to put the drone up for a scouting mission. This is looking North from near the entrance to the park. I much prefer shooting the ocean when it’s boisterous or even storm tossed but the combination of the relatively calm seas and the serene sky still had some appeal.

I did use Luminar Neo to bring out some detail in the sky but wanted to keep its effects minimized. Your thoughts?

Bill, I love your drone images. Not only do they present a unique perspective, but are so well seen and processed. They are also of an areas of the PNW that I love. I really like this one, but it seems to be a bit over sharpened or “crunchy”. Perhaps it is my monitor (viewing on an old laptop).

Bill, the extended distance view here is special. The build up of haze into the distance is also nice. The sky seems more green than blue, have you tried reducing the green a touch? The stacked ridges along the right are a fine detail.

I think the crunchy effect Jim speaks of comes from it being a drone image. I took my lead from Mark’s remarks as to the sky. I gave it the old college try in altering the greens in the sky, but took it a step further by adding a bit of blue back into the foreground water and futz around with a large pool of water in the right side foreground as I felt the right side was flatting out too much.
As with any critique, it is just another opinion.

Another great image Bill! This one needs to be seen full screen to really appreciate the depth. Love the hazy background and the detailed foreground. To my eye, the composition is quite pleasing too. I love the Oregon Coast and hope to spend some time there this year. My son and his wife recently moved to Corvallis so we have more reason than ever to visit!
