Description
One of my very rare forays into Avian so brutal honesty appreciated. I’ve been revisiting our Alaska trip from early Fall 2017 with the thought of putting together a photo book. One leg of our trip was a week long small boat cruise (60 passengers) out of Juneau to various sites in the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay. We didn’t hit any ports of call like the big ships and most nights we would anchor in some remote fjord and then the next morning hit the kayaks and go exploring. Spotted this eagle who seemed utterly unperturbed by our presence and the sounds of camera shutters. I wasn’t confident enough in the kayak to take my #1 rig of the A77II and 70-400 so had to settle for a bit shorter focal length but I liked the proportion of bird to tree and thought the tree itself was a very complementary element. >=))>

This is pretty close to full frame. Should I crop tighter or does this view suit you?

This is really nice, Bill. I’d hesitate to crop it more because I love that tree and the horizontal branch at the bottom anchors it in that direction so nicely. If you have the canvas, you might shift the scene to the right in the frame to decenter the tree and eagle a bit more.
I doubt if it will show up in a book, but the large image looks rather noisy. If you haven’t reprocessed this from the raw file, you might want to do so using the modern noise reduction software. I’ve redone some old stuff using DxO PureRaw and the difference is astounding.
It is an eagle and a tree Bill. Both elements make the whole for me.
The chaotic branches, the break at the top and the other foliage in the background serve to set the eagle in the environment and it looks comfortable in its realm.
If I were being fussy I would like to see a different angle where the bird and tree are separated, but hey you were in a Kyak. Nice shooting.
This is a wonderful image. The new version with noise reduction is much improved. My personal tastes have been shifting towards less contrast, so I love this one! I like wildlife images that show more of its environment. Well done.
The larger view in the repost is splendid, a “classic” I would say. I like the presence of the eagle in the larger field of view, and the texture of the trees and branches. I like it very much!
