Shenks Ferry # 2

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Another grouping of early spring color that caught my eye while hiking the trail in Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve in PA. It is an amazing place for wildflowers, but unfortunately the light breeze kept the flowers in a constant state of motion. It was a pretty hike being surrounded by bluebells, Dutchman’s breeches, trillium, columbine and more. Definitely going back next April.

Specific Feedback

Do you think the tree in the LLC meshes well enough with the other trees in the scene? My original intent was not to include it, but there was no possible way to do that as we were supposed to stay on the trail. There was also the terrain falling off on that side to contend with. Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 24-200 @ 200 mm, f 13 @ 1/13th sec, ISO 100, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod

This is another fine example of emerging spring Ed, and you could put together a nice project of these with what you’ve been posting.

I think this is a very nice spring image, but with that said I prefer The Veil and (especially) Stick Season Is Over. In both of those, the competing lines of the foreground were more pronounced against the background, and I do think the left here is a bit of a mismatch with the rest of the image.

Ed,

This is delightful! I agree with John that you’ve got a wonderful series, or project, going here.

To the tree in the LL, clearly it’s included on purpose (or as you indicate, no choice…) The only thing I would suggest for a more even balance would be to tone down slightly the luminosity/saturation of that tree to come closer to the main tree on the right. And I do love that side especially with the nice tree structure to anchor all the emerging spring leaves.

On balance, this works very nicely for me.

I agree that that large shape on the left feels intrusive and clashes with the tree (circle vs up & down lines with splashes).

Ed, you made the best of a bad situation. ie. harsh overhead light, terrain limitations. I agree the tree on the left clashes with the rest of the image. That’s why I deleted all mine. Perhaps if you lessened the luminosity of the leaves.
