Critique Style Requested: Standard
The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I could not believe how sharp this image was at 1/50th of a second at 400mm. These are tough birds to capture because they only appear briefly out in the open. Maybe next year for a better one.
Specific Feedback
A very busy composition, but that’s what you get with warblers. I might crop some more from the left. What do you think?

I don’t think I’d crop anything more from the left, Jim, unless you take a touch off the bottom at the same time. I like the way the bird’s body forms a diagonal pretty much intersecting that lower corner. If you felt so inclined, it would be pretty easy to cleanup some of the background twigs. The one that crosses above the bird’s head is a bit distracting to me. It is very good detail for 1/50th, but the modern image stabilization should let us get much lower than the old 1/focal length rule of thumb and even in the old days I sometimes got lucky.
Amazing detail at 1/50! I like the crop as is. The bird is in the lower left and looking up to the right. Plenty of room to fly off! Nice work!
Impressive technique for 50th of a second. Nice colors I think I’m OK with the branches. They do draw attention., but the bird is clearly the star of the show. Nice work.
Very nice look at the Redstart, Jim. I like the setting you have here and probably wouldn’t change the crop.
Hi Jim, very nice catch. Always tough to get warblers. I like the pose of the bird with that upward look. Exposure and crop look good. I could see removing the branch just over the bird’s head running horizontal.
Hi Jim
The green leaves frame the Redstart, and the head turn and eye contact sell the photograph. Nice work.

Another one I missed! (Have fallen into the black hole of astro again.) Gorgeous, artistically and technically. I could see a crop from the top and right, but that’s not necessarily any better – just different. Congratulations on the EP! Well-deserved!
