Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I missed the seascape weekly challenge a few weeks ago…because I was in California photographing seascapes. This one is from Garapata state park, just down the road from Point Lobos. The power of the sea is something you really feel there.

Specific Feedback

For this image I liked the way that the shape of the wave echoed the shape of the rock (or is it the other way around?). I chose a monochrome conversion to emphasize the shapes. Does that work?

I have many shots where I kept the color, and I like those a lot too.

Technical Details

Sony A7rIv with a Tamron 70-180 at f/9 and 1/100 sec. Cropping, monochrome conversion and dodging and burning in Lightroom

I think it really shows the power of the sea. Well done. It seems this section of cliff bears the brunt quite often with the concave wear in the rock.

Will: One of my all time favorite subjects. I like your conversion, comp and SS choice especially. Nicely composed, captured, converted and presented. >=))>

Excellent composition, @WillR. The gentle curve of the main cliff wall interacts nicely with the powerful wave crashing against it. In the larger version, I enjoyed the droplets/spray coming off the wave. The black and white conversion is perfectly processed. Perfect tonality with some nice bright highlights, luminous mid-tones in a couple areas and some dark shadows, all the contrast working beautifully to highlight this lovely landscape.

Will, this shows the power of the sea well. The details in the wall of rock are great as is the backsplash from the wave. B&W feels right. It may be my monitor setting, but it seems just a tad dark to me, a modest pull up on the tone curve may work.
