Through my heart

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The rain gets old after a while, but it does add a lot for flower pictures. This is just a grab shot while I was out poking around and found a mayfly that I also photographed. I didn’t spend a lot of time with this, but did try a couple different angles and I like this one for the semi-oblique aspect - I think it shows the depth and breadth of these flowers pretty well. It was pretty breezy so I had to wait a bit to get it in one.

Specific Feedback

There will be more, but maybe not so nice as this one, so suggest away. Ditto with processing ideas. More rain for Sunday I think.

Technical Details

Handheld

Lr for the crop and some global and local adjustments to manage the tonalities and saturation. Added some texture and sharpening to the flower itself and used the lens blur tool to soften the background somewhat.

Kris: Really nice capture of this beauty. The drops are indeed a fine bonus. You have the POF in exactly the right spot and I do like your POV. Looks like you’re going to have several more days of blooms to shoot as well. Well done. >=))>

OH, DROOL!! Wonderful colors and detail! The POV lets the anthers stand out so well against the slightly darker center and lets the buds poke out expectantly. The BG looks naturally soft in both contrast and focus – good work there. I love that some of the water drops are transparent against the darker BG.

This is lovely, Kris. I think the depth of field works beautifully, with all the important parts nice and crisp and a fairly gentle fall-off of the focus. The water drops, of course, are a huge plus.

If you have some extra rain, we’ll take it. I always dread dry weather leading up to the 4th, though we’ve gotten rid of most of the idiots in the local neighborhood who like to shoot of their rockets in a dry prairie.

Very nice, Kris. No suggestions, although like Dennis I’d like to borrow some rain.

Same here! We’ll spend the 4th on the deck with a cooler of beer and a fire hose.

Thanks @Bill_Fach, @Diane_Miller, @Don_Peters & @Dennis_Plank - rain never really gives us what we want - always too much or not enough. It’s been VERY wet around here with only 1 or 2 rain-free days per week. It rained last night and will probably have thundershowers popping up all day. Maybe tomorrow I can kayak. Anyway…the plant is drenched right now and the stems bent low so I’m not sure if I can get something workable, but I can try. We do the fourth all together in the neighborhood at one couple’s giant pole barn. It works pretty well and rains about 30% of the years we do it.
