Tree Patterns

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have an affinity for trees. and saw these trees in the mountains near Tucson.

Specific Feedback

Open to any input but I am particularly interested in input on the composition. I am relatively new to landscape photography and I have gotten conflicting feedback on the composition from people I respect. The composition feels right to me but as I said, I have a lot to learn!

Hi Bill,
You managed to find a wonderful grouping of trees here. I particularly like the graceful curvature of the trunks as they fan out from the bottom middle of the frame towards the two upper corners. The soft subdued light is also quite nice and is perfect for showcasing all the delicate details and colors in the trees. The only thing that really bothers me is that section of yellow leaves toward the LRC as they do catch my eye a little. Maybe you can lower the yellow saturation in that area and it would blend in a little more. This image is inviting and well worth a little more work. Beautifully done.

Bill,

I too have a great affinity for trees. You’ve done an excellent job isolating these desert trees from the broader scene.

I was thinking about Ed’s comment on the yellow leaves. I could go either way, but in the end I think that tree adds to the image rather than taking away. It follows my personal axiom: “If you’re going to include something, make it on purpose.” In this case, it’s clear you wanted to keep those leaves and tree. I do agree with Ed though that perhaps those yellows could be tweaked a little. And for me, my suggestion is the image overall is mayb 1/3 - 1/2 stop over in terms of brightness. I could see dropping the exposure just a tad. Then perhaps even a slight boost in vibrance (personal choice here, no right or wrongs…) Then again, as presented I think this captures the desert dry, almost brittle envioronment. At a minimum, I would burn down the bush (ok, not literally folks… ha ha.)

Great eye to spot and compose this. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you @Ed_Lowe and @Lon_Overacker ! Good to know I am on the right track and now I can learn to trust my intuition a bit more. I did rework the image with the suggestions that you made. I do like it better. Thanks again!

Hi, @Bill_Bomberry. Personally, I think you nailed the composition. You were also wise to shoot this in soft light as any kind of direct light likely would have resulted in far too much contrast. I am very much preferring your re-work as it incorporates all of the suggestions I would have made. You’re definitely on the right track; keep up the good work!

The colour palette in the photo is really appealing and I love the dark curvy lines of the tree trunks and limbs. Nice work, especially with the rework which made a nice image even nicer!
