Trying to open

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

A closer view of the last Hibiscus I posted, from a friend’s garden. A cloudy/foggy day stalled its plan to open and it stayed like this for hours. I forgot to check back to see if it ever made it.

Specific Feedback

All comments welcome!

Technical Details

A focus stack, and then some tonal and color enhancement in PS, but nothing heroic. Slight crop from both sides.

What a gorgeous flower. I have similar native hibiscus in my garden but usually the beetles and our dog eat them before I get the chance to photography them! I’m pleased it didn’t open for you. The semi open petals and the colours are so delicate.

When I first looked I thought that I would consider filling in the empty spots on top left and bottom right, but now I think they are just fine and perhaps balance the composition?

Diane: Like @Glenys_Passier I think your decision to not quite fill the frame was a good one. I also like that those BG corners have some detail in them that contribute nicely to the shot. Beautiful flower indeed superbly rendered. >=))>

Hi Diane! I love this image. The colors and detail are really nice, but the comp and partially opened bloom really shine. I also thought about potentially filling the dark corners, but like the others, I like it as is better. Very well done!

Thanks, @Glenys_Passier, @Bill_Fach and @Steve_Kennedy! I was concerned about the dark areas too and couldn’t find a camera position or rotation that filled them without excluding the curly petal tips and edges that I liked. I thought about trying to fill them with cloned petals but never got that far. I’m glad you don’t find them too bothersome. (Flowers can be almost as frustrating as moving subjects.)

I like this even more than your previous one, as the detail of the veining is so clear in this one. Reminds me a bit of cabbage leaves, though much more elegant and colorful. The contrast of deep red and pink is just beautiful. And I’m glad you kept the two dark patches too.

Diane , the scattered dark pink makes this frame ..beautifully crafted

The veins in the petals provide visual interest and the center of the flower is darn sharp. Comp is spot on and I can’t provide you with any nits. Excellent image…Jim

Another Spanish Dancer beauty. I love the swirl and implied movement. Well the colors, too, those are great. There’s a glowing sort of luster. The leaves in the corners don’t bother me. The texture is a knock out for sure. So lovely and a little bit ethereal.

Thanks, @Mike_Friel, @Balan_Vinod, @Jim_Zablotny and @Kris_Smith! And Kris – Spanish Dancer – what a fantastic reaction! I’m terrible at good titles.
