Hesitant Hibiscus

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

From a couple of weeks ago at a friend’s garden. (She has a better microclimate than I do, and fewer deer.) It was a cloudy morning and these blooms were stuck half-open. But I thought they were interesting that way.

Specific Feedback

All comments welcome!

Technical Details

A focus stack with Zerene – very little done to the raw files. After the stack, only a crop from the sides to 8x10 and some darkening of the BG.

A very different view than the usual wide open Hibiscus image, Diane. I like the light on the blooms and the way the half open shapes work. I also like the way your angle minimizes the usual dominating pistil and stamens. This one is strictly a matter of taste, but the structure in the petals seems to detract a little from the soft beauty I usually associate with flowers so I might try reducing that a little. A very fine image of these flowers.

Diane: We have a variety very similar to this in our garden and I also like to catch them in the opening stages. I’ve even done some time lapses that are fun to watch. I love your comp and the addition of the bud is a very nice touch. Beautiful flowers superbly captured and presented.>=)>

Diane. The Color and Texture. It Is All There. The veins are amazing.

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank, @Bill_Fach and @Gill_Vanderlip. I did tweak tonalities to bring out the structure in the petals, but not hugely. It would be easy to dial it back with a reduction in the opacity of the layer but I’ll leave it. It was basically a gift of the clearing fog lighting and wouldn’t be nearly as obvious if the flower was fully open.
