When a Bee is No Longer a Bee

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a footnote to @Jim_Zablotny’s recent shot:
https://community.naturephotographers.network/t/when-a-bee-is-not-a-bee-dasylechia-atrox-asilidae/

This Korean robber fly has its dagger firmly in the back of a hapless bee.

Specific Feedback

This is a major crop. I got closer but the back-stabber zoomed off at record speed before I could click. I wish some of the small parts were sharper. So it’s just a nature note.

Technical Details

OM1 + 60mm macro 1/2000 f6.3 ISO 1600

In LR, tonal adjustments and selective sharpening with Adjustment Brush. Denoise and cropping.

Amazing! If I saw this I wouldn’t know what I was seeing so thanks for the education! The IQ is fine for me – hardly something that would require studio shot quality. You captured a dynamic pose with what looks like full sunlight handled well.

Mike,

This is just wild that you saw this and had the good fortune of capturing it. Amazing how the food chain works.

Mike: Spectacular behavioral shot with great detail where it matters. Terrific capture of the moment. >=))>

Well done, Mike. Glad you got this wonderful shot before trying to get in closer. A lesson for all of us trying to capture any kind of wildlife (big or small), get some shots at a distance and go slow and see if they will let you get closer. If they don’t then at least you have a shot. Fine details in this where it matters.

Good action of a robber fly doing its thing. You captured the viciousness of this predaceous fly very well. For this type of shot, I would use f16-f20 so that the DOF included more of the subjects. However, the important stuff is nice and sharp. Awesome capture…Jim

Maybe not technically perfect, Mike, but far more than a nature note. The important parts are all nice and crisp and you caught some really great action.

Mike this is a fine “nature in action” shot. The amount of fir on both insects is quite striking.

Hi Mike, great action shot captured showing this predation. Really demonstrates the perils of smaller insects. Our robber flies over here look quite similar. I wonder what bringing down the highlights a bit would look like.

@Sandy_Richards-Brown and @Allen_Sparks - thanks for suggestions, I’ve subdued the shot and agree it looks better.
