About This Image
I have been fortunate to have the annual shad run minutes from my home and shoot there for at least a month every year. At this point, I am really looking for unusual images and not the bird with one fish. A great spot to be in
Why This Image?
I have never photographed an Osprey dropping a fish after capture. I have seen it a few times but it is rare. This Osprey grabbed two but one got away.
What I’m Trying to Express or Explore
The caught fish is looking down at the dropped fish. Moments before they were swimming upstream together.

Technical Details
Nikon Z8 with Nikon 180-600 lens. ISO 1100, 600mm 1/4000.
Hi Andrew, It’s a dramatic image with crisp, sharp focus. It tells the story and getting the eyes of all three animals helps to convey this.
The left wing is very dominant and it would probably help the overall balance of the shot if we could see the other one. But of course wildlife photography doesn’t often give us the luxury of perfect framing!
I might give just a little more space above and right of the bird if you have it.
Great photo! I love the action and seeing all the eyes is a great bonus. I agree with Ryan that maybe a bit more room above and to the right might be helpful. It is a great image regardless. One lucky fish.
It’s really a rare and fantastic action shot. I love the fact that the Osprey and both the fish are in focus ; and the sharp eye of the Osprey really draws the viewer into the scene.
