Wood Frog Calling

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

We finally warmed up enough to get the Wood Frogs calling. (About 3 weeks later than usual.) I managed to catch this one near peak extension of it’s sound bladders with the sound waves radiating out in the water from the caller. Fascinating how his legs have blocked the water waves at this early time in the call.

Specific Feedback

Getting his cheek pouches fully inflated is a major challgenge, since I have yet to find an early signal that says press the shutter NOW!..

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 238, 1/640 s, f/10, iso 6400, tripod. AI noise reduction in Lightroom Classic.

Wonderful in all aspects!!! I love the action and the colors, as well as the froggie itself. I don’t know how often they call but this looks like a place to just go to burst mode at 20 fps and hope to catch the peak action, with a lot of deleting later. That’s my fudge for not having pre-capture. (Easy enough in LR, thankfully.)

On a warm, damp evening several days ago it sounded like hundreds of our Tree Frogs were having a concert. I wished them luck.

Awesome shot of this behavior, Mark. Looks like he’s wearing a life jacket. The ripples from the call are wonderful and do an excellent job of framing the subject.

Fascinating image, Mark. I love seeing wildlife in action, their reverberations (in this case, literally) on their environment. The leaf color and droplet rings add to the mystique here. Spring is about to spring.

Mark, like aircraft being designed after the study of the avian world, this guy gave me thought of the Olympic swimmers and breast stroke swimming. Or maybe the inflated cheeks giving the look of a person floating with a life-preserver. Very cool image. Any thoughts of 180 rotation for a different look? Regardless, only thought for change might be to clone the two small bulbs or debris in the calm water area. Just a thought there… :star_struck:

Mark, a very interesting photo of the frog, even showing water drop waves for comparison. It makes me wonder if the female senses both the sound itself and the vibration waves. Did Canon issue firmware for pre-capture, which might make catching a shot like this easier?

Oh, I like this Mark! The rings of water just frames him in nicely. He is also camouflaged well. Excellent shot and I can’t think of a thing to improve it.

This is just great! I can acctually hear to frogs call in this image. Well done. Wouldn’t change a thing.

@Mark_Seaver, another well deserved EP here on this one…Congratulations… :+1: :star_struck:

Mark: I must have had a major brain freeze to miss this one. What a spectacular image from the subject to the water action to the underlying leaves. Got a major :scream:-meter spike once I finally got around to viewing . Most excellent and congrats on the EP. >=))>
