Description
Gollanfield, Highland, Scotland.
This, thus far is my favourite ever shot taken at the little pine copse in the isolated field at Gollanfield near Nairn in Scotland. It has everything that I could wish for and more with one very notable exception, the full moon had sunk into low cloud behind the copse. I had my snow dusted field, baked in the golden glow of a fine winter sunrise and I had my pink and blue stained sky of the twilight wedge, through which the moon, had alas already been gobbled up in cloud. However I was fortunate indeed to have a cloud of several hundred pink footed geese make an aeriel fly by.

Ian: From the thumbnail I thought that you had escaped to some tropical paradise so I was surprised and delighted to see this is in Scotland (still way high on my bucket list, in large part due to your images). I was also pleasantly surprised to see so little motion blur in the geese at your SS. Serendipity perhaps but a marvelous result even without the moon. >=))>
Exactly my take from the thumbnail too Even at full size, it is reminiscent of sand/palm trees/distant waves.
My assessment matches yours, it is a wonderful combination of elements just as you describe, and since I didn’t know the moon was hiding from view I don’t miss it.
I love this. Like some of the other reviewers, I thought this was warm and tropical when looking at the small version. Rather than that being a shortcoming, I think it’s an asset- once I realized it was not palms in front of a beach, I did a double-take and looked more closely.
I needed to be told there was snow in the background. The image still feels warm to me, even after realizing those were pines and not palms. If you are trying to convey a feeling of chill, maybe cool the foreground a bit?
Hi Ian,
I too thought you must have escaped to some tropical island. If you had not mentioned the full moon it never would have entered my mind. You already have some wonderful elements in this scene with the geese , the stand of trees and the blush of pink in the sky; which I really love. Beautifully done and no suggestions from me.
