Description
Elgol Beach on the Isle of Skye, Scotland is a stunning location and best suits a very moody winter evening beneath an equally brooding sky which gives the whole scene a distictly Tolkeinesque feel. Sgurr Nastri bathed in red sunset light looks positively Mordor, though ironically it is the snow capped Cuillins beyond which are far loftier. I would have liked to have had time to apply a 6 stop ND filter to smooth out the water, but I knew I had but seconds before the light snuffed out.

Simply gorgeous light depicted in this image, Ian! Your rush to make an image certainly paid off handsomely. The oranges on the mountain in the background are stunning and so is the side lighting on the foreground rocks and that butte on the right. The chop in the water would have been better had you applied your ND filter but it works well as is.
I’m finding that I have this feeling of the snowcapped mountain on the right being intruded upon by that gorgeous colored rock on the right edge of the frame and to me it makes the scene a little unorthodox. I’m finding that those beautifully lit foreground rocks and the light hitting that background mountain are the star of the show and yet there is this intruder coming into the scene that is also gorgeous on the right trying its best to steal the scene. I think this might go against your intentions but I’m trying to simplify this scene in this rework and I’m not sure it works at all but here it is. Pretty sure I like the original better.
Love this one, @Ian_Cameron! There are so many triangles in the image and they all fit together like puzzle pieces. The large red rock on the right balances the red mountain nicely, and with the diagonal between them my eye kind of follows the shortline out to the red rock, and then across the water to the mountain. You had perfect conditions for this image. No critique from me!
The soft light and deep color of the rocks/mountain come through nicely Ian.
Exactly the thought that I had. If you had had more time, finding a composition where the outcrop didn’t block the distant mountain would have been optimal.
Your crop was precisely my first reaction to this image. It seemed like everything had one sense of light and color and the right was incongruous with it. Personally I like the background mountain with its reds the most. I like its moodiness.
This is a beautiful photo. The light is gorgeous…good job getting the photo before it disappeared. Personally, I prefer the original with the rock on the right left in place. To my eye, it balances the composition.
