Eucalyptus bark

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This bit of bark on a tree trunk was catching the sun and grabbed my eye. I liked the way it seemed to be floating in space.

The floatiness is awesome (to my eye), the shadow detail pleasant, colors superb, angle engaging. Catching the little flaw in the in-focus area was the proper choice. Not sure a focus stack would improve things, as this seems to be all about the shapes, light/shadow, and minimalism. Nicely seen.

I do like this very much. For interest, and maybe to make it more abstract, I rotated and flipped it:

I agree with @Gary_Hook that this is all about light/shadow and minimalism (the colors are great too). But I do think the shapes might benefit from a stack. That said, your original shows the fragility of the bark; I feel it could fall off at any minute, and the amount of focus is not that big a deal.

Gary, Mike, thanks for the comments. I tried various rotated positions on this one. Several of them worked but in the end I settled on the original.

Don: I like your and @Mike_Friel’s orientations which is reflective of good vision and solid composition. About the only thing that might make this better for me is if there was more BG to the right of the bark and less on the left. The capture of the light is perfect. Well seen and presented. >=))>

I really love the lighting in this image, Don. I personally would have liked to see more depth of field as when I examine the bark peel, it seems to keep going in and out of focus because of the curvature and shallow depth of field. Probably just my personal taste.

Don, it’s nice to find objects like this in nature. It looks more like a leaf than bark. I am wondering, if the bark is still hanging there, if it would be worth going back and trying some shots with maybe a higher number f-stop and less shutter speed since it’s probably relatively still. I like it flipped as @Mike_Friel illistrated too.

Bill, Dennis, Shirley, I appreciate your comments.
