Glacial Heritage Dawn

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I took a couple of people out to the Glacial Heritage preserve near my house last spring to do some photography. While I would have liked a little more cloud in the sky, it was still a great morning and one of the people, Dan Coe, was new to me. It was fortuitous in another way because I discovered that in addition to photography, his day job is doing maps and information displays for the geology division of our state Department of Natural Resources. In his spare time he creates utterly gorgeous images from Lidar data. I managed to talk him into giving a presentation to our camera club and it went over very well.

Specific Feedback

I exposed this to avoid blowing out the low sun, so it was pretty dark. I brought up parts of the image but tried to keep the very early morning feel by not making it too bright and I still wanted to be sure I didn’t lose the very warm light. I’m interested it whether I kept that feel and if you think it needs more light/contrast/whatever.

Technical Details

14 image panorama, vertical orientation, tripod, Sony A1, 28-70 f/2.8 @ 28 mm, f/18, 1/2500, iso 3200. Merged in LR, further processing in LR & PS CC.

Dennis, 14 images is way out of my wheelhouse using film. Your placement and offset of the sunburst is perfect. Typically, me included, the tendency is to center the sunburst. Your idea here works very nicely. The scene is a bit dark as you’ve mentioned, but I like it as presented here. Seems very natural and calming overall… :+1:

Dennis: Works great for me and I agree with @Paul_Breitkreuz regarding the placement of the sun. By placing it there there is a natural flow to the light that helps me follow the image across the page. That layer of fog is icing on a very fine cake. Most excellent. >=))>

Dennis, this feels quite natural to me. I also like the long “lever” between the trees on the left and right.
