Heceta Farewell

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

My last night on the Oregon Coast was spent at Heceta Head. This is my all time favorite place on the coast. I started visiting Oregon as a very young boy; my grandparents had a beach house in Yachats just a few miles north of here and we would go there from Indiana almost every summer. I’ve continued to return as an adult for over 50 years now and I never grow tired of this place. The last two years I’ve been able to shoot the head with my drone and I love the POV from the ocean side. The keeper’s house east of the light is a very fine bed and breakfast that I highly recommend. I’m not sure when or if I’ll go back as the time to check off other places on my bucket list may be drawing short. Despite my general good health, at 75 no one ever knows. At least I have this image to summon the memories and I’m thankful for the role this corner of creation has played in my life. >=))>

Specific Feedback

Tried to time this to catch the light shining out but the drone is not quite as responsive as my land based gear. The wave action on the bottom edge pulls my eye a bit but I like its texture and decided not to tame or crop it. Your thoughts?

Wonderful light you have here. You caught that breaking wave just perfectly. Without it the composition would be all wrong. That parking lot doesn’t work real well for me but not much can be done about that.

Wow, gorgeous! Marvelous light, perfect Drone perspective, and a good look at the Light. Wave action is superb, and whites exceptional.
Truly fine work!

Bill, this looks great. The lighthouse and it’s support buildings stand out well. The wave action in the bottom half and those two sea stacks add a lot to the story.

Igor: That’s actually a small section of beach unless you’re referring to the fenced in area at the keeper’s house. That’s a lawn used for gatherings and weddings. Would you consider cloning in the cliff face or trees where the beach is?

The two rocky mounds are really attractive and it would be hard to part with them. However you could create an image with the lighthouse in the center, a vertical. The current composition suggests you wanted to have both the two cliffs and the lighthouse in the picture.

I really like this as shot Bill. I like the sea stacks and waves that act as leading lines to the lighthouse and on up the coast behind it. This has really nice lighting and details, and you can’t beat the perspective.

Bill, Heceta Head is also my favourite lighthouse on the Oregon coast and I think your image really shows it off nicely. The action in the waves is fantastic and I like how you used the drone to get an more unusual and interesting vantage point.

Bill,

It is a great composition and caught at the perfect time with regards to the wave action. To bad about the white structure on the right side, overall the photo would be nice without it there, in my opinion, however I do not think there is anything you can do.

Bill, this is a well-balanced and composed image. I like the drone prospective as I have only seen this from the overlook along highway when I was on the Oregon coast two years ago. Well done.

Terrific, for all the reasons cited. You mentioned you hoped to catch the light of the lighthouse. I realizes it changes the mood a bunch, but by masking out the lighthouse window and darkening the rest of the image, you have the light.

Quite likely the best (certainly most unique) image I’ve seen of Heceta Head, @Bill_Fach. This is absolutely stunning.
