Hidden Thunder

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Takakaw Falls in Yoho NP is the second highest waterfall in Canada (depending on how it is measured anywhere from 254 to 373 meters high). It is hidden away at the end of a rather primitive but still paved road. While access is not particularly difficult, there are few visitors, at least the two times we have visited. One can hear the falls well before coming into sight of them. I hiked up even closer but from this vantage point there was still a lot of spray in the air. I had on full rain gear and got some odd looks from folks on the trail who were looking for the rain clouds. When I got closer to the falls I was glad I was dressed properly!

Specific Feedback

I’m pretty happy with this comp . Waited for some wispy clouds to enter the scene but are they enough to break the monotony of the pure blue sky?

I can hear it from here! I like the way the SS stopped the action to emphasize the energy. Looks like most of the water is diverted somewhere behind the mid-ground ridge? The rainbow is a very cool feature. The sky looks good but I could wonder about a slight desaturation of the blues. The wispy clouds evoke some sort of steam rising from the raging water. Altogether, quite cool!

Wow, Bill, that’s quite a drop no matter how it’s measured and quite a distance for the spray to travel too! High falls always present a challenge in finding the right vantage point and I think you found a good one. Looks like the water is very restricted near the bottom before widening out and I can’t imagine the rate of flow through that bottleneck. The whole scene is well lit and I like how you captured the water’s turbulence in the foreground. Wispy clouds and rainbow are bonuses in a fine capture.

This is a really nice waterfall image Bill. My only thought was that it could possibly benefit some if the rock wall around the waterfall was slightly darker to make the water stand out more. Also some added saturation on the water in the river could be an added touch. I did a re-edit on the image to see the difference and attached it here. Of course this is just personal preference as most everything in photo editing ends up being.

This is a wonderful waterfall! The roar and the mist must have been quite exhilarating. It looks wild and untamed. The beautiful turbid water running over the rocks just adds to the drama.

And then, you managed a rainbow. Icing on the cake.

Bill, getting a rainbow that far from the falls tells how heavy the spray was. Your comp. looks very good. My one idea is to dodge the clouds a bit to give them more presence in the sky. As shown they do break up the blue nicely.

Bill, this must have been quite an experience. The rainbow is icing on the cake. Those little clouds are good addition to the sky too. I can just image people were giving you the look and then the sky looking for some rain coming their way.
