Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The hummingbird hawkmoths outlast most of the butterflies in Korea. This one, Macroglossum pyrrhosticta, is very attractive, with its long eyelashes and smooth furry coat. A few were feeding on wild Agastache rugosa beside a road yesterday.

Specific Feedback

Does the yellow in the background distract?

Technical Details

OM1 + 60mm macro 1/8000 f2.8 ISO 12800

Cropped in LR, then selected the moth with the Radial Filter and reduced Highlights and Clarity in the BG. Usual treatment for the whole with the Black and White sliders, then Denoise. In PS refined the tonalities, mainly by further reducing Highlights.

Very cool, Mike. I really like the moth’s feeding behavior. To my eye, it looks as if the purples in the flowers might be oversaturated a bit as they seem to have lost some detail I’d expect to be there.

Mike, what a shot of this fast little guy in flight. He is beautiful. I agree with @Dennis_Plank about the saturation. Should be an easy fix.

Mike, a great catch of this elusive moth. I love the BG, but agree that it’s a bit over-saturated. Fine detail on the body and antennae, and the blurred wings give a sense of motion,.
Nice!

Mike I love the colors in this one. Agree with toning down the saturation just a touch. I like the wing blur with the captured patterns, and the moth is tack sharp. Nice one.

Thank you @Dennis_Plank @Sandy_Richards-Brown @Ed_Williams @Shirley_Freeman for your feedback. I’ve posted a rework with less saturation in the flowers and slight brightening of darker parts of the BG.

Mike: Travels and work kept me from commenting on this earlier but what a great capture! Love the colors and the comp. The repost makes an already good image even better. Most excellent. >=))>

@Bill_Fach - thank you, Bill!
