Description
At the turn of the new year I wandered out to the coast at Ano Nuevo State Reserve really in the hopes of seeing some Elephant seals. I arrived to late to go out with the last docent led tour and so I went to another part of the beach and walked around not really thinking of making any photos. But then I started to see some amazing shapes, textures, and colors among the pebbles and stones. It was late in the afternoon and the soft, warm light gave the beach floor an amazing look. I pulled the macro lens out and got to work.
Specific Feedback
Any feedback on the overall feel and composition is appreciated.

Always good to be prepared, Youssef, as you were here with a macro lens in your bag. It is always good to look down too, especially for macro opportunities. This was a great find and nice capture. So many different colors and shapes, and yes, the lighting was sweet. The placement in the frame of the rocks and pebbles are nice. I especially like the brown one with the stripe of white running through it. I can’t think of anything to improve this shot. Well done!
A beautiful collection of beach stones, Youssef, and very well composed and processed. Beach stones make good subjects, but it can be a nightmare finding the right composition and this one is excellent.
Oh very cool. Great shapes and textures. Not 100% sure of the level of blue, but maybe the stones were blue. Nice arrangement of large and small rocks and I like the depth of color, too. These kinds of scenes are so mesmerizing.
Youssef, I love this photo! Not only for the masterful way you captured it, but as a perfect example of how beauty can be found in ordinary places - and sometimes by just looking down.
Beautiful collection of rocks - nature knows how to arrange things, doesn’t she? Did you consider blocking the direct light so that the light would be more even across the frame? Maybe that would have negated the warm tones, though. I could see a flip, too. A vertical would have more energy, but maybe that isn’t what you’re going for. It’s lovely no matter how you look at it!
Thank you All who commented and for awarding this photo with Editor’s Pick. It was not expected at all. @Bonnie_Lampley, I think this photo would work in any orientation, but I did not think of that until you tried it as a vertical. Thanks.
