Jumbled Rocks

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

When I saw this week’s challenge this image immediately came to mind. I can’t think of any other photo of mine that would be better suited to fit the description of geometric shapes in nature. This wall of rocks contain not only lots of shapes, but it has shapes within shapes. I think it’s a challenge to the viewer to find many of them, and I would hope it will hold your interest in trying to do so.

Specific Feedback

This photo was taken in the winter when the sun was low in the sky and casting some warm light on the rocks. I am wondering if the foreground is possibly too warm and could benefit from a cooler color temperature. I would appreciate feedback on this and any other issues that could be changed to improve the image. Thank you for looking.

Ted;

Great image. Love the composition. Two thumbs up!

Regarding the overall warm color cast, I tried cooling down the overall image (-14 using the Lightroom temperature slider), and then bumping up the green colors in the vegetation (saturation + brightness using aLightroom color picker mask) to add a bit of color contrast. See attached.

What do you think? Too much tweaking?

Cheers,
Franz Gisin

Thanks @franz. I like your edit and appreciate your suggestions. Brightening up the foreground greenery seems to work without distracting from the main subject of the rock wall in the background.

What a dramatic landscape! Weathered granite (I presume) makes such interesting shapes. The light is gorgeous.

I do think it’s a bit on the warm side (and the sky color feels odd). I had a go at it to see what adjusting the color balance would do. Here is your original histogram. The cool end of the spectrum is mostly in the darks, so the lights feel warmer.

Here’s the histogram after cooling it to balance out the color. Cooling it put more blues into the lights.

Doing that, though, made it look muddy, so I did some adjustments of lights and darks (all this was done in ACR) to bring back the nice contrast you have in your original. I think I made it a bit too reddish, but you get the idea.

Thank you Bonnie. I appreciate your suggestions and the time you spent with the edits on this image. I was looking forward to seeing how others would try to adjust some things with this image. I think I will revisit it and try using some of the ideas both you and @franz suggested.
