Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I’ve tried everything I can think of to get a Lupine shot that I like and finally decided to try one straight down. From about a month ago after a light rain. Limited focus stack.

That’s a very original view of a lupine. I’ve tried this angle with flowers, and always the ground as BG rather upsets the eye - but your green here complements the flower so well. Well done.

This is very cool, Diane. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a top view image of a lupine and it makes for a whole different look. The limited stack works nicely here. You might consider blurring the edge of the red bloom on the “bottom” to match the others in the same tier as it kind of looks out of place to my eye. Very original and very effective.

Thanks, @Mike_Friel and @Dennis_Plank! Mike, I’ve also had unpleasing BGs when shooting down on flowers and was delighted with this one. It was an unusually tall spike and the BG was low and simple. I didn’t do any extra blurring except removing one brighter area on the left. Dennis, I’ll have a look at that area – I hadn’t noticed how different it is.

DOF I really like your Image and how you presented it. I think this works just fine… I know nothing about this flower. I think The blue pedals going soft is very interesting and unique. The water drops work really nice …Beautiful simple image. Very cool Diane

Hi Diane! I really like this unique perspective of a lupine. I also like how you’ve used DOF to separate the top bloom from the rest of the flower. As others have said, the background works very well too. Nice work!

Thanks, @Gill_Vanderlip and @Steve_Kennedy!

Diane: Great use of the limited stacking technique to produce a unique POV and a very pleasing result. Of course being a Texan I like any lupine (bluebonnet is the correct term ) so this is especially pleasing. Nicely conceived and superbly executed. >=))>

Thanks, @Bill_Fach! For years I called them Lupinus texus – and then I found out they are actually Lupinus texensis. So I guess you do have bragging rights to them! There are now some hybrids, and a tall yellow one is often planted on hillsides along our California highway construction areas, probably for erosion control. I call it Lupinus CalTransia.

I really like this one, Diane. The dew drops are a nice addition. I’m not familiar with the flower so they must not grow out here in the east. Nice shot.

Thanks, @Sandy_Richards-Brown and @Shirley_Freeman! And thanks Shirley and @Bill_Fach for the EP!! A delightful surprise!

Peaceful and serene. Not a perspective I typically see, and I love it! Wonderful composition

Thanks, @Melamud!

Nice! I remember trying this in the 2012 and it didn’t come out nearly as well. I think it’s because stacking wasn’t a thing and you have hit just the right amount to make it have natural fall off, but enough crisp detail to hold attention. Amazing since they move in the least amount of air. The colors look right and the dew is the perfect concentrator for a feeling of lushnees. Really fab.

Thanks, @Kris_Smith! I wish i had worked these more when they were in bloom. Next year!
