Mountain Bluebird

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This bluebird was hanging around in the open area just below Old Faithful at Yellowstone and I watched it go back and forth between the ground and this perch while we were waiting for the geyser to go off.

Specific Feedback

I love the bird, but the splotchiness of the background bothers me. When I use Topaz Denoise on this it makes it look worse, with banding, but the bird’s face is noisy. Not sure what to do with the background, or if I need to export from Lightroom using a different setting, etc.

Technical Details

Fuji X-H2S, 1/2000s, f/8, ISO 3200, 600mm

I used Lightroom Classic and its denoise tool for RAW. I tried to use Topaz Denoise on the exported JPG but it makes the background look worse.

Nice pose and a great perch, Debbie. The combined tree/sky background really works well with the bluebird. I particularly like the head turn and its obvious attention to something in the sky.

Songbirds have to be so watchful and I always love it when we catch them at it. The action conveys their place in the world and as much as we might envy their flight, colors and song, we don’t envy this. Nice details in the plumage and use of a complementary background and perch - harmonious!

Nice catch - the colours are good, and the BG doesn’t bother me at all.

Hi Debbie
Cool looking Blue Bird. As for de-noise, you can get a free trial of DXO Pure Raw 4. ( I was never happy with Topaz Denoise)

@Peter_Morrissey I have DXO PureRaw and in this case, the results were better with the Lightroom DeNoise for RAW.

@Dennis_Plank @Sandy_Richards-Brown @Kris_Smith okay, maybe it’s just me with the background. Thank you.

Hi Debbie: One thing you might try is a thin border of the deepest blue from the bluebird. The background in this image doesn’t like to end and I think a border might do the trick.

@Dennis_Plank I added a border, I kind of like that…

I rather like the background; I think it complements the bluebird nicely. Nice pose and detail. At least on my monitor, I don’t see much of a border. Maybe add a few more pixels.
