Image Description

The “Beauty of Bark” in this case is from the Chipmunk’s perspective: Caught in a tree and unable to dash away, this handsome forest spirit lay flat and motionless along a branch and against a pine as I shot photos from about 7 feet away. I think it’s a safe guess, noting the color palette in the bark, that this was a learned camoflage behavior against raptors.

Feedback Requests

Lots of opportunity to punch this up with brightening, blacks, contrast, etc. but that might defeat the point of the image: To show the Chipmunk hiding in plain sight thanks to the tree.

Pertinent Technical Details

Due to shade, shot ISO400, F5.6, 1/800th, 300MM handheld

James: A handsome and accommodating little fellow indeed. My only suggestion would be to crop tighter on both sides but more so from the right to make that bit of empty sky in the URC go away and bring a lot more emphasis to the critter and the perch.>=))>

Appreciate it Bill.
Small critters for me are as special as the big ones.

James, this is an excellent look at this chipmunk. They are great fun to watch and you can occasionally get close, like you did here.

Thanks Mark — did my idea to submit this in the “bark” category work, or is it a stretch to think this critter knows how to hide itself this way ?

James, I’d call this a stretch, but you’re not the first person to “stretch” the WC interpretation (including me!).

A lovely and fun image in any case, with very nice detail!
