Raining Hard

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

As a cold front moved through yesterday, it began with some very hard rain, but no thunder and very little wind. I took the opportunity to photograph the action of the large raindrops falling on my pond, using the freshly grown lily pads to add some reality. The heavy rain and large drops meant that there were multiple rebound splashes in a single frame, as you see here.

Specific Feedback

I like the mix of real from the lily pads and the water rebounds with the abstraction of the ripple structures in the water. From experience, I know that shutterspeeds of 1/30 s or faster are needed to minimize blurring both of the ripple structures and the drop rebounds. I also wanted decent sharpness across the frame, hence the f/16 aperature.

Technical Details

R5, 100-500 @ 238, 1/60 s, f/16, iso 3200, tripod and raingear for all.

I saw the thumbnail and said to myself, that’s gotta be Mark Seaver. I think this is my favorite lily pad image of yours.

This is excellent, Mark. It really does an awesome job of conveying the heavy rain and the lily pads offer a very nice lodging place for the viewer’s eye.

Hi Mark,
Lovely lily pad with rain drops. It would make a smashing accompaniment to the the frog images, as the frogs are clearly laying low, despite having their mythical tuffet right there waiting for them.

This is a great photograph! I love how the water is swirly and dreamy while the lily pads are super sharp, shiny, and bright!

Mark, for me the suspended rain drops on what appears to be the rebound bounce really makes this image for me. No thoughts for change whatsoever…Excellent image here… :+1: :star_struck:

Mark: Great action shot. I do like the drops but almost wish for some more SS but if you were at ISO 3200 and still had to use 1/60 I’m not sure how much faster you could go without really stretching the ISO. Perhaps a stack of each drop? Top notch shot. >=))>
