Ride of the Valkyrie

Hello all,

I posted on the Landscape Critique yesterday and introduced myself. In addition to landscape photography, I also shoot wildlife and am looking forward to our exchanges and discussions here.

Spring is an exciting time here in SoCal as we have a lot of activities going on. Birds of prey are mating and nesting and there are a lot of activities with the shorebirds as well. This is a frame of a female peregrine falcon on our coastline.

Welcome, Adhika. This is a stunning introductory post. As a clarification, you can post once per day in each forum. The falcon looks very sharp and I love the head on shot-very difficult for the AF system to handle in my experience. You also had some wonderful mottled clouds in the background. The only thing I’d suggest in this image is a slight change in the composition. I think it could use just a sliver more canvas on top and maybe a reversal of the amount of space on the sides as it seems to be moving slightly toward the left side of the frame.

An excellent image, and I’m really looking forward to your posts and comments.

Thanks, @Dennis_Plank! Good thought about that canvas extension on the left. I am gonna give that a try. The background is actually the Pacific Ocean. This was taken from a cliff and she was climbing up.

Welcome to NPN! Wonderful head on image of the Peregrine. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Thanks @Sandy_Richards-Brown and @Keith_Bauer!

This is the San Pedro peregrine, Sandy. Whenever you are in the area, give me a holler!

I do both landscape and wildlife religiously so I am looking forward to getting together some time!

I have shot at Lake Hodges once before. It was an amazing place. I heard that they are starting to nest now, so it’s pretty exciting to see the chicks coming out soon.

Welcome! This is awesome. Focus is spot-on, and that ocean BG is great. I’d prefer a bit of room above that left wingtip and to the left of the right wingtip. I also think you could add some depth to the blacks in the bird. Really looking forward to more!

Welcome Adhika, and what a welcome you have granted yourself. High-level skills displayed in getting a fast flying raptor like this coming towards you ! No nits, just awe… Look forward to your post ! Cheers, Hans

@Lyle_Gruby and @Hans_Overduin thank you so much for the warm welcome. It means a lot coming from you guys!

@Lyle_Gruby, oh those are some really good points about the choice of crop and the black point. I will look into that.

Sandy, I was not aware of the EP! Thanks for the heads up  I’m honored to be here.

Hi Adhika,
Congrats on the EP! Well deserved!
And welcome to NPN.

Thanks, Allen! It’s good to be here.

Wonderful shot, Adhika. I echo the sentiment about including more real estate on the top (and left, if you have it in the original frame), in order to give the falcon a bit more breathing room. What a sweet background.

Welcome to NPN Adhika! Great first post, love the head on view and the background, just a hair more room up top for me. Congrats on the pick!
