Scissors-tailed Flycatcher

Witnessed a number of these chasing intruders like the Caracara and other hawk but couldn’t get close enough - had to be satisfied with one coming in to quench its thirst - barely got a couple of shots …

Oh what a beauty (in my best Steve Irwin accent). That tail! Too bad that the whole reflection isn’t there, but darn if you didn’t nail the focus. You could add some canvas on the left and it wouldn’t go astray. That cocked, alert stance is really energizing.

Wonderful ground-level shot, with very nice pose and details! It’s hard to get that view outside of a beach, but I guess a pond is pretty close.

I like the low camera placement and that the entire bird has been captured. The DOF is very nice and the image has lots of pleasing color. I certainly wish for more of the reflection, but there is always next time. Well done…Jim

Great pose and excellent composition, Karl. While the full reflection would be nice, I don’t really miss it. I seem to recall the head of this species being closer to white than gray, but I could be wrong.

Thanks @Dennis_Plank - you are right - the adult has a whiter head, the juvenile grey but has a shorter tail
I have bumped back the whites but had to be extra careful with white clipping

Super composition (rule of thirdsy), and I love how the BG colours are reflected in the foreground.Great bird too.

Hi Karl
Good thing come to he who waits. This flycatcher add new meaning to shake a tail feather. Great low angle and head turn.
