Spring Color Pano + rework

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is the first of a couple more spring images I have to share. Mike and I were returning from a trip to Susquehanna SP when I noticed some wonderful vibrant spring colors in some trees out across some land being farmed. There was no place to park; since we were on a small country road; so I wound up parking in a small cemetery situated on a small hill looking out over the fields.

Specific Feedback

This is busy and chaotic so I am wondering how well that works for everyone. At first that bare stark section in the middle bothered me, but then it grew on me as I liked the visual tension created by it’s starkness flanked by the delicate emerging spring growth. Anyone else feel that way or is it just me. Anything else you notice please feel free to mention it.

Technical Details

Nikon Z 7, Nikon 100-400 @ 380 mm, f 11 @ 1/25 sec, ISO 100, Kase magnetic CPL, cable release & tripod

Hi Ed, I think that this composition works rather well with that bare stark section in the middle because it’s flanked by the colourful sections on either side of it. In a sense you kind of have three vertical bands or layers and those look very nice. I also like the colour harmony/contrast between the reddish brown on the left and the greens on the right. In all honestly, I don’t think I would change anything about this - I like it very much!

Ed, the split view works nicely here. The amount of tree(s) structure in this scene is amazing. The tree trunks, branches, twigs, leaves, colors, density, etc. would provide an outstanding puzzle…good to go… :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

It’s very engaging, Ed.

The bright tones are all clustered on the right, and they tend to upstage the subtler tones and colors on the left. I tried increasing the luminance of the oranges and dampening the yellows a bit, with a little more brightness and overall contrast. This isn’t right but it conveys the idea. It may be a good idea, it may be a bad one.

Thanks everyone @Tom_Nevesely, @Paul_Breitkreuz and @Don_Peters for your thoughts on this image; always appreciated. This was a crop from the original as the 100-400 was not long enough. This crop has grown on me, but I was curious as to what others thought about it.
@Don_Peters : Thanks for taking the time to do a rework; it looks good. I will play around with your suggestion and see what I come up with.

Ed, I ordered a used 1.4 extender for my 100-400 that will be delivered today. You might want to consider that.

Here is a rework with some suggestions from @Don_Peters. I reduced the saturation of the yellow leaves, added a little red saturation to those on the left and lightened the left 2/3 of the frame a little.

I will look into the 1.4 extender.
