Spring is near and re-post

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is the first tree in bloom where I go for my daily walk and if your patient will attract a bird or two. Usually they’re deep in the branches , but this Yellow-rumped Warbler was kind enough to pose for me.

Specific Feedback

Any thoughts appreciated.

And pose it did. Super capture. Beautiful tree, beautiful bird.

As much as I adore the pink flowers, they are a distraction. I would seek more separation between the bird and the flowers by brightening the bird and darkening the background a tad. I think one can push the highlights/whites and clarity on the bird without it looking weird. And a crop give the bird more compositional weight.

Apparently, there’s a “thing” in wildlife photography where the subject is small in the frame. And maybe that’s okay here; not everything has to appeal to everyone, right?

I’ll add an edit, which you may ignore.

Very nice catch of the warbler, Allen. I haven’t seen any trees in bloom yet, but the row of these in town was torn out several years ago and some other tree planted instead. They were always a welcome harbinger of spring.

I do like Gary’s rework of the image. It makes the warbler pop nicely while retaining the lovely blossoms. I don’t think I’d crop quite as far as he did, as I like the idea of retaining the full blossom clump in front of the bird.

Thanks @Gary_Hook and @Dennis_Plank for your comments. I’ve been trying to go for more environment in my images lately, but Gary’s crop works to keep the environment and eliminated some unneeded negative space and I agreed with Dennis about keeping the full group of blossoms.

Nice job on the repost, Allen.

A great little bird, giving you a great pose with perch and background, perfect. I like the “more” habitat shots lately.

It’s a hard decision where to crop. I like your repost and glad you kept the full bunch of blossom in front of the bird. I might also consider keeping the entire bud cluster on the bottom edge. It’s great when you have such a variety of crop suggestions.

Beautiful setting Allen and great bird subject too. Agree your re-crop works quite well. I find the bird and flowers quite pleasing.

As I’m learning in discussions with lots of folks, cropping is both tough and magic. I think you’ve found the right balance @Allen_Brooks.
