Self Critique

I like that I was able to achieve a circular pattern with the buds and I think it gives it kind of a look of rain drops or bubbles. I took a lot of images of this patch of flowers and this was my husband’s favorite and ended up being mine too. I think maybe I should have centered the flowers more, but maybe not….

Creative direction

Just a fun ICM image. Just want it to feel light and airy and happy like spring.

Description

Just a beautiful hillside of poppies starting to bloom in my town.

I’ve missed your photos. This is gorgeous, Vanessa, just enough to let us know what it is, but certainly an abstract. I’d suggest removing the brown spot in the LRC. The poppies touching the borders don’t bother me at all. Nice!

Hi Vanessa,
that looks fantastic. I love the fresh spring colors and the painterly look that is introduced by the ICM.

I wish there was a little bit more space at the top and the right of the image. But this is not a big deal.

Well done!

Vanessa, I have missed you and your photos too! I like this! The motion really works in this shot. I have got to remember to try ICM sometime. I just don’t think about it. It does remind me of bubbles. Who would have thought that would be the outcome. Nice. I agree a bit more room on top and to the right might could use a bit more space. Certainly fine as is though.

Hi Vanessa, I was wondering about you just the other day.

I’m not really qualified to critique ICM work but I can say that I like the shapes, highlights and colors in this!
It is a quite cheerful image!

Vanessa,

Great to see an image post from you! This is simply wonderful! You most certainly accomplished your goal of wanting this to be “light and airy and happy like spring.” Indeed! Love the brightness - there is great vitality and energy created here too.

The great news here with the ICM is that you’re not constrained by the format/frame of the camera. And because of the abstract nature, I think we’re free to “manipulate” the image in any way we feel like. So you mentioned about centering the flowers - often difficult with the random movements of the ICM capture… but why not re-arrange in post? All I did here was to transform/skew the bottom right quadrant, moving the lower right poppy a little inwards. I did that so I could crop and still keep that poppy in the frame. The reason I cropped was to remove the darker upper right, plus the poppies were breaching the edge of the frame. Also, cropping to eliminate the softer patch in the lower right. I think the result here still provides the same light and airy feeling. Oh, and I also dodged some of the darker greens to try and reduce the contrast, hopefully emphasizing that brightness.

Your original is still a wonderful ICM! Glad you shared!

Thanks everyone @Mike_Friel @Shirley_Freeman @Jens_Ober @Merv @Lon_Overacker for your kind comments! I really appreciate it. It seems pretty unanimous that there needed to be space at that top right area and I agree about that and that darker part in the bottom right (an obscured poppy) … I like what you did with the crop @Lon_Overacker! It gives it more balance. Thanks everyone for looking and your feedback! Always appreciated!

Hi Vanessa, terrific ICM image! The circular patterns and mix of lively colors make this a wonderful shot. Well done! I think Lon nailed it with his proposed crop. That version feels more balanced to me. I also like the lower contrast in his version to help give that airy Spring like feel to the image. Thank you for posting your image!
