About This Image
Early morning on our last day in Tasmania. We had camped among the small dunes overnight with penguins and hoped they would be around in the morning. They weren’t. A little disappointed with their departure but the sunrise made up for that.

Is the water too flat? Overboard on the shutter? I always thought it looked a little like a sheet of concrete.
Any comments on anything are always appreciated!
Glenys: I like this scene and can imagine myself enjoying the dawn silence other than the murmur of the waves and the calls of the birds. The water treatment works well for me. I’m surprised the birds were still enough that you didn’t have a lot of motion blur in them, especially considering you must not have been too far away at this focal length. Perhaps not all that you wished for but this is certainly a grand consolation prize. >=))>
Glenys, the subtle colors showing in the water and their streakiness is a very painterly result. I notice the motion blur in some of the gulls, but it’s minor. I especially like how the wet sand has repeated the sky colors. Looks like a great morning!
Lovely image Glenys. Especially like the play of colors with the orange and cool gray/blue of the water. And the water looks good to me - sets the mood well IMO. I also noticed the motion blur in the front birds but don’t see that as a significant issue.
Well done.
Very lovely!! The water works just fine for me. I get the vibe of a hot day dawning, but not sure why – maybe the slightly muted colors. Brighter colors would suggest to me a cold morning. So that it suggests an atmosphere (even if not accurate) is a plus. The horizontal crop feels perfect, and the band of reflected sky is a wonderful touch! No nits!!
Hi Glenys
I would love to send this photograph to my granddaughter and show her this is why you get up to see a sunrise. Nice work.
Peter
Ps, how did you determine 20 sec. was the correct shutter speed?
The scene is gorgeous, Glenys. As to the water, it does look a bit flat and the slow shutter speed blurred the birds a lot. That said, If this were printed and put on a wall where it was being viewed at a reasonable distance instead of staring at it on a computer screen, I think it would be a great image.
@Bill_Fach , it was cold. I think the gulls were frozen. @Mark_Seaver Thank you. I didn’t expect the birds to be sharp and I sort of like that they aren’t. @Diane_Miller it was an Autumn day on Tasmania’s north coast. It was very cold. @Peter_Morrissey ! I would be chuffed if you sent this image to your grand-daugher! Determining shutter speed is mostly trial and error for me Peter. I wanted the water smooth, so shutter a bit on the long side. @Dennis_Plank ! I agree. I think I killed the water. But, the birds, I’m starting to like.
I LOVE this. This is personally my favorite time of day and colors of end of a day and I think you’ve captured that look beautifully.
I’m not sure what you mean by the water being “flat” other than to assume how the long exposure smoothed out, or flattened all the waves? I’m good with what and how you’ve captured this. The water as presented actually helps separate the line of color in the sand and shorebirds, with the distant rock and dusk sky. This is pretty gorgeous!
The only suggestion I have might be to add some contrast to the rock and birds. I don’t mean to have the rock go silhouette or anything, just a wee bit more contrast to match the birds and sharp reflections in the sand.
The faint, whispy clouds also add a great deal. Beautifully captured!
Thank you @Lon_Overacker ! Yes. I mean I flattened the waves. I’m pleased you like it, as is. I also like you suggestion of a little more contrast in the rock.
