Umpqua River

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The Umpqua River Scenic Highway in Oregon is a beautiful drive, and a route I often take to get to the southern Oregon coast. It’s common that I see something I think might be an interesting photograph as I drive it, but all too often can’t find a place to safely pull over and set up a tripod. Fortunately this view of the Umpqua flowing around a bend was from a nice shoulder pullout. I liked the evening fog drifting lazily over the water. I just needed someone fly fishing out there.

Specific Feedback

I don’t have any specific questions for this one, but would love your impression of it and any suggestions for improvement.

John, without that small collection of FG rocks I feel it would not work near as well. I think, cliché, it does a neat job of “anchoring” the scene. The fog provides a very peaceful feeling overall too. The scene was well worth your drive and pullover stop IMO… :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: :+1:

BTW: my cousins are from the state of Washington Umpqua tribe… :victory_hand:

I really like this image, John. My eye moves all through this image and the fog in the upper center seems to keep it from leaving the top, instead bringing me left then back down to start the round all over again. A lovely, peaceful river scene.

I love these types of images. I see them as reality vs dream images. Here the duality is shown by the sharp clarity of the rock vs the soft less distinguishable background. In addition it’s shown in the tonal difference between the two. In that regard I like that the rocks are substantially darker than the rest. Can’t think of any suggestions. Perhaps if the rocks were further inward from the corner but I also like where they are.

Beautiful image John! There is so much to look at in the image, it lets the eye roam around and keeps your attention. The rocks in the foreground being sharper and darker really helps, not having them there makes the image less impactful to me. I can’t think of anything I’d change.

Love it, John. Very dreamy quality. Just the right mixture of softness and clarity. I think the FG rocks are a necessary counterbalance to the rest of the image. My thoughts echo @Paul_Breitkreuz, except I don’t have any cousins from Washington.

Hi John,
Moody and mysterious; I love it! This has a wonderful yin- yang effect to it with the dreamy atmospherics in the BG all the while having that cluster of tack sharp rocks in the FG. I find this image to be a very serene and peaceful; almost like I am right there soaking up the cool damp atmospherics. No suggestions from me.

This is lovely scene, John, and beautifully composed. I imagine you were limited by the road and the river bank, but that didn’t hamper your choices. It’s rare that a pull out is so perfectly placed!

I especially love the curve of the river into the fog, the triangle of light at the top and the triangles of darker reflection framing the bottom, and those rocks–if they were further to the right or left, the image would feel less serene and stable. As is, it’s a perfect Umpqua evening.

John. This is cool. The softness with the fog and reflection is very peaceful, Works great in B&W… The rocks really give this image a natural honest look… Really Nice !!!

I’m really liking this, John! The fog creates a wonderful, quiet atmosphere and I like that you chose to make this a black and white image because I (somehow) think that colour would be a distraction. The rocks in the bottom right are a nice anchor point and I like how my eyes just follow the river into the mist. I think this is perfect as is.

Thank you @Paul_Breitkreuz , @Dennis_Plank , @Igor_Doncov , @Scott_Fricke , @Michael_Lowe , @Ed_Lowe , @Marylynne_Diggs , @Gill_Vanderlip , and @Tom_Nevesely !

Very cool!

John: I’ve been away from the site for a few days but the title caught my eye immediately. Three of my cousins lived in Roseburg on the South Umpqua and it was a placid enough stretch that we could swim and raft in the current. The North Umpqua Highway to Crater Lake is one that I try to get to every time we get out there. I’ve not looked as carefully at the road between Roseburg and the coast as I’m usually in a hurry to get to the ocean but I’m glad you spotted this scene and captured is so nicely. All of your Oregon images betray your love for the place. Most excellent. >=))>
