Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

An advantage to working in your own backyard, as many of us do, is that you’re free to cut and arrange things to your liking. I couldn’t find a suitable background for my catkin study so snipped one off, clamped the stem with a vice grip, and sited it with lawn as a background. This is a 25% crop of original. Sunlight was softened by high clouds.

Specific Feedback

How is the comp, too tight along the edges? Was thinking of rotating this vertically, but kind of favor the landscape view. All comments and suggestions are welcome and thanks for viewing.

Technical Details

Fuji X-H2, Fuji XF70-300 @248mm, ISO 125, f/11, 1/40s, tripod. Post processing included adjustments to exposure, a little dehaze, and sharpening.

Nice detail in an interesting subject; good BG. The crop feels crowded for my taste.

Agree! Thanks @Diane_Miller .

A nice find and capture, Jim. I agree with @Diane_Miller on the tight crop.

A third vote for loosening the crop up a bit, particularly on the bottom. Otherwise, a good choice of the background and a great job on the focus and depth of field.

Thanks to @Dennis_Plank , @Shirley_Freeman , and @Diane_Miller for their suggestions and compliments.

Repost is excellent. I like the details and the green BG works well at adding some additional color to the scene. Very nice as presented with the space added…Jim

Great job on the repost, Jim.

Nicely done in the repost, Jim.

Jim: Much better on the repost. As a general rule I don’t like elements like this touching the frame. From my film days I can still have a tendency to want to fill the frame and have to consciously zoom out a bit. The detail on the head is marvelous and the BG works really well >=))>

@Bill_Fach , @Shirley_Freeman , @Dennis_Plank and @Jim_Zablotny , thanks for suggesting more breathing room :wink:
