Description
The Bluebirds are feeding young and I finally figured out that I could sit there quietly without disturbing them too much. Camera on a tripod, prefocused at the nest box, remote release in my hand to avoid movement. Lots of wasted frames.
How do they manage to cram these big bugs down the kids’ throats?
OMG Diane you totally nailed it. I love it and hate the fate of the mantis at the same time. Nature makes me crazy sometimes. It is how it works, I know. Such amazing exposure and shutter capture. That wing spread and sharpness. Just the harsh realities on point. I’m amazed at how good you are.
As well as the great sharpness, I love the way the blue sky supports the darker blue of the feathers. I think some careful dissection took place for the chicks. Super shot, Diane.
This is an impressive image with superb wing position, detail, translucency of the wings against the sky, and of course I can’t leave out the piece of grass in the mouth. Well done!
Terrific image Diane! WOW! what a catch. Love the spread wing and tail position. Sharpness on the body of the bird is spot on. Love seeing the mantis in the mouth. Great technique to capture this. Wonderful image!
Amazing capture Diane! Patience paid off. The sweep of the wings and the “triangle” of the tail just create such a nice graphic pattern. Its just a pleasure to look at. I also love the subtle clouds in the sky breaking up the BG .
Excellent, Diane. Beautiful wing position and the backlight makes it really special. I’ve never seen a Bluebird with quite that big an insect, it should make a great meal for one of the youngsters. I’m not sure where our Bluebirds are. They usually have two or three broods, but they often change boxes between broods and can be very secretive until the youngsters start getting demanding.
Thanks, @Paul_Breitkreuz, @Kris_Smith, @Mike_Friel, @David_Schoen, @Allen_Sparks, @Max_Waugh, @Youssef_Ismail, @Dennis_Plank and @Peter_Morrissey! I’ve spent a lot of time sitting there and have a few more worth keeping. I wasn’t sure if anyone would find the hint of cloud in the UR distracting – it was clearing fog. I could probably bring it out more by darkening the sky a little. I’m hoping for a second brood. If they have raised an earlier one (in a different nestbox) I missed it.
Diane: excellent capture of the bird and its catch both of which are sharp and show great detail. I really like how the uniform light blue background serves to highlight the bird and mantis. It’s a wall hanger.
