Owl Butterfly not sure

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

At the butterfly house at the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Pretty humid in there that day. When they fly beautiful blue wings, but they are so jumpy.

Specific Feedback

Did a pretty crop here, but I did try a fill flash setting 2/3 of a stop down on the flash.

Technical Details

R6m2 RF 100-500 at 100mm, could not back up anymore. f/7.1 iso 2000 1/200 The butterfly was hanging upside down on the flower so I rotated it CCW 90

Dean, what a beautiful butterfly. Not familiar with the Owl Butterfly, so can’t help you with the ID. I really am enjoying it though. Wonderful details and color in him/her. Just love its markings. I think the CCW works to right-side up the BF. I am wondering if a slight crop off the bottom would be helpful. It doesn’t seem to add to the overall image and might draw more attention to the BF and flowers. Just a thought. It looks good to me as presented.

Very nice, Dean. I like what the bit of fill flash did for you. For ID, you might just go to the website for the botanical gardens. They should have an illustrated list of the species in the butterfly house.

Dean: Definitely an Owl. We have them in the Cockrell Center here. I could see a little crop from the bottom but I love the orchid perch and think your flash application was just right. Nicely done :+1: :+1:>=)>

Thanks for the feedback, @Dennis_Plank, @Shirley_Freeman, and @Bill_Fach. I did a small crop and looks better. The fill flash was very nice know it is working.

Dean, the butterfly stands out nicely and shows excellent details (thanks to the gentle flash). The orchids are a fine bonus. I agree that cropping the stems off the bottom would be good.
