"Tears of a Pine"

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have started working on a project documenting and exploring the aftermath of Hurricane Helene here in Aiken, SC. We were right in the path. After people, the next most effected things were the area’s large and lovey trees. In some images I look at the wider view, but I am also looking at this in more of a close up/macro view. I’m hoping over time, it will help tell the story of the loss of all these trees. I am tentatively calling the overall project “Premature Fall.”

As I am getting in close, I am seeing some interesting details. In this one, even though I know this is just sap, it made me think these poor trees were shedding a few tears on their premature falls, and end of their lives.

Specific Feedback

Any feedback on this image would be nice. Though, also looking for ideas/advice as I work on this over the next few weeks and possibly months. On the macro level, what might be things to look for and explore?

Patrick, this is enough to move us to tears too. A lot of damage done, and I (living more in central NC) was mainly focusing on the people that were affected by Helene. You did a superb job in my opinion of capturing damage done to the trees. I love the reflections (I think I see you and the tripod in them) the “tear drops” of sap. If there is any way to improve this shot any more than you presented here, it might be to crop a bit of the oof bark off the right and remove the lighter piece of bar at the top (maybe a slight crop to do this). Just a thought. I’m not sure if the saturation might need pulling down a bit or not. I’m not as good at that as some folks here are. Great shot. Looking forward to more.

@Shirley_Freeman , I’m surprised you were able to see me that clearly in the sap. I was thinking to post an extreme close up to show it. You are right, a little bit of a crop would clean things up just that extra bit. The saturation has been tricky, between the light and the very yellow color of the wood, it’s a balance. I need to keep it in mind when I process. Hope you all in NC got through OK. It was a big surprise for all of us that it came our way and hit so hard. Thanks again.
